    Default Eared Grebe

Hi, this photo was taken in 2006, about 4 months after I started 'shooting' birds...a male Eared Grebe in breeding plumage. Canon Rebel XT with Canon 100-400 L IS lens, 1/800 sec, f/6.3, ISO 200, Evaluative metering...

Question: With quite a lot of water around the bird, but a pretty sharp shot, what is the 'best' crop? I've tried to get in reasonably tight, but to leave the bird 'someplace to go' in the space on the left of the frame. Any comments on this or other aspects of the photo?

I like your crop; a bit wider would be OK too. With this species itis pretty much mandatory to make darken the pupil after selecting it with a Quick Mask via Hue/Sat -90 SAT and -50 to -90 on Lightness slider. Next, also mandatory, select the iris with a Quick Mask and reduce the RED SAT 10-20 points. Lastly, the light is a bit harsh.

The crop, angle and exposure control look good. I find the stuff in the water a bit distracting and might remove the white spots in the plumage. Keep them coming!

Very cool looking bird. The pose is OK. The sticks on top of his head are distracting.
