This bird was heading up hill from Etty Bay towards a rainforest patch I had gone to this spot in anticipation feeling if I had the bird coming towards me it would be an advantage. It was an advantage partly, but as I have only the 400mm lens this advantage quickly evaporated when the bird got too close and I had no alternative but to take portrait type images. I got a few images - this one is as taken with focus on head and what else fitted in..so no crop off bottom some off top and left side to suit my quirky compositional requirements. After this short encounter the bird vanished from sight into the rainforest.

Nice portrait with good detail of this crazy looking bird ( I believe they can be quite dangerous)...Maybe some NR on the BG!

Really eye catching shot, fine definition and lovely colours. When I read your introductory comments I chuckled when you said the bird vanished from site and went into the rainforest, I couldn't help but think about one of David Attenborough's programmes when someone was attacked by a casowary - luckily he had a shield with him!

Thanks for NR suggestion, Dumay, will give it a run.
Jonathan, no real problem as I had the car as buffer but she was certainly aware.

Truly a strange animal right out of the minds of Coneheads! Once, years ago, I was adventuring in Australia and had been warned about these beasts. Well, as luck would have it I came across one. That time it was ME disappearing into the rain forest. As for the photo, super crisp detail and a nice look back pose. BG a bit busy but you have nice separation from it. I am loving these shots from you Rod.

Excellent shot. Great detail, real nice head turn, and I really like the colors in its neck and head.
    Well done.
