DOF on the head and chest area is perfect. Great side lighting!

Perfect exposure and lighting has allowed the true beauty of this lovely loon to shine through.

Excellent exposure and light. The DOF is indeed great and so is the comp and angle. Very nice!

Beautiful portrait, Mike. Fantastic light indeed. Love the droplet of water hanging off the bill. Excellent all around as usual!

    Mike:

Well exposed, looks like you were blessed with soft light, good shooting angle too.

Having looked at a few loon pictures over the years, this guy seems a bit too smooth without the fine texture and detail I would expect from a minimal crop like this.

Did you need to run noise reduction on him? Perhaps what I am seeing is just a side effect of the low contrast lighting, and restrained sharpening?

I do like it, just curious.

    Cheers

Thanks to all for the comments!

Randy, NR was limited to the BG, none at all on the bird.
The only place I am seeing the "smooth" look that you mention is on the face and the upper part of the neck.
That is actually what drew me to this particular image as I liked the effect which also appears in the RAW file.
I assume that it's the result of the angle at which the light was hitting the face.

    Mike:

Thanks for the follow up. Must have just been the light then. There are areas that look quite sharp, like the bill and pupil, but the white areas on the back aren't showing the usual striations and detail I would expect. Some of that may be the falling off of DOF.

A good lesson in how much of what we perceive as detail comes from the lighting.

    Hope to see more.

    Cheers

A real beauty Mike. Good discussion of light and detail - I was thinking similar to Randy.

A beauty, Mike. I spent all weekend trying to get a photo of one.
I envy you guys who get to see them regularly.
    Great angle and view.

Mike, very nice. terrific exposure and processing. With the head turned this way, tight crop is working very well here.
