    Default Armageddon at the Bosque

They had just done a controlled burn at the Bosque, and were drawing birds into the field by spreading barley with a truck. I was photographing Cranes landing in the field when a dust devil appeared out of nowhere. It moved right through the ashes from the controlled burn and freaked the Cranes out. I photographed this Crane as it was trying to escape from 'Armageddon.' Definitely one of my more unique frames from the Bosque! A bit of clone work done to remove a couple of Crane heads from the bottom of the frame.

    Doug:

A striking image, very surreal, looks like a plague of locusts on first glance.

The two birds in the back add for me.

This image def. needs the explanation to make sense of it.

    Cheers

Beautiful image Doug! Looks like a painting. I like the take-off pose, setting and OOF birds in the BG. I would print and hang this one.

Wild looking, unique photo, Doug. The light on the main subject makes it look surreal.

Interesting indeed, and the two OOF cranes make it even more eerie. I'm with Randy that the image does need accompanying explanation to make sense of it, but awesome to get this!!

Doug, good flying posture, and you have still managed to make it stand out amongst the flying ash. I also like the two distant cranes. I wonder how many people would have actually bothered to capture a scene like this. I would have been more worried about getting my equipment dirty.

Doug, this is awesome. I love the flying debris, the light on the main bird, and the dark blurry background birds. I'll be in the minority and say that one doesn't need the explanation as the image jumps out as being different and striking right away. Learning the story behind it makes for interesting reading.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Very interesting and dramatic image, Doug.
Controlled burning burns out of control sometimes. I heard some horror stories about it.

Unique and stunning image, Doug. The two spectators in the bg indeed add a lot. Splendid!

A contest winner; cloning is a problem, isn't it?

It would have to be a contest that allows cloning. I've got another Bosque image from my last visit with the same cloning issue. I'll be posting that one soon; it's one of my favorite all-time Bosque photos.

I would hope an image such as this would get out into the wider community. It is superb. In my eyes it already a winner.

    Hi Doug,
I saw this image yesterday and wasn't sure about it, so decided to sleep on it. No doubt it is very unusual and dark and dramatic. The 2 birds in the reeds add a nice depth to the image. I agree that in order to understand the picture one needs an explanation but I would just title it "Fleeing the Fire" and then it is easy to figure out the image!
This is definitely contest material (except for the cloning). I sure like how unusual it is,
    Gail

Doug, I agree with Jay about it being contest material, except for the cloning issue. Surely there are some contests out there that allow cloning -- if so, you should enter it. Or just enter it in one of the biggies and lie about it -- you'll get caught but any PR is good PR, right?

    Cheers,
    Greg

Exactly, though they're both a little better looking than you so that may be a factor to consider
