    Default Columbian Ground Squirrel

    Attached Images Attached Images

A Columbian Ground Squirrel from July.

In late July this year I visited a local Provincial Park to look for black bears amongst wildflowers but got side tracked for a few hours with the large Ground Squirrel colony. I
found myself a quiet spot and laid myself flat on the ground and just waited. It wasnt long before they started popping out of their burrows to see what was going on.

    Techs, Canon 7D with 400mm F5.6 @ F5.6, 1/640, ISO 200 supported on bag.

    Thanks

    Jamie

Hi Jamie, great POV with an absolutely cracking BKG.

I really like the crop and the minimal amount of space at the foot of the image as it emphasises the low perspective. Nice work, BTW have you tried flipping it left to right?

Top shot Jamie, the background is perfect, the low angle couldnt be any lower, and the pose is excellent. Detail and sharpness look good. Great job with this one. A ground squirrel as seen through the eyes of another ground squirrel...
    cheers

Can't add anything further to the above comments. An all round excellent image with great appeal for the viewer. Well done. Those claws are amazing.

    Thanks Steve,

No I hadn't tried flipping it until now. I think the original comp works best.

Great low angle and clean BG. He gave you a nic epose and you got a nice level of sharpness on him.

That's absolutely fine Jamie, the reason I raised it was the old phrase 'looking in, or looking out of frame'. Personally I feel it appears better balanced flipped, but hey, no sweat...

I understand this Steve, but I was trained to use this when it related to a page. Therefore, on a screen like this there is no right or left, whereas if you had a double page spread you would always have the subject facing in to the gutter. Probably many points of 'ascetic' view here.

Thanks Steve C, Steve K, Harshad, Hilary and Dumay.

The point raised by Steve about flipping the image got me thinking over the weekend. I had never encountered 'looking in, or looking out of frame' before as I have had no formal training in photography.

I am not a great fan of post editing photo manipulation and personally feel flipping the image is not something I would consider but would rather think about in the field.

Would this be considered a 'rule of photography'?
