I matched lots of faces with familiar names at Bosque this past week. It was great meeting everyone. I just got back today and have oodles of images to go through, but I figured I better start somewhere. Here's an early morning one from the crane pond.

    Ian,

Greetings. Love the color on this one... the blue-orange contrast is great. You might consider lightening the red crown a bit to bring out the eye more. Looking forward to seeing more of your Bosque shots.

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Nice meeting you at the Bosque Ian! I like the warm light on the bird. I'd run some additional sharpening on the Crane. Do you have a frame where the head isn't overlapping with the far wing?

Thanks Michael and Doug! I'll work on lightening that crown and throw some more sharpening on and see what happens. Doug, I have a gazillion images and might have posted prematurely, so I need to go through and see if I have one with that light but without that overlap. So far I haven't found one.

    Ian,

Nice job with the higher ISO to raise the shutter speed. When controlling the fame it is better when things do not intersect with the head and the layer at the top can pull the eye out of the frame. Nice habitat, wish the eye were a bit sharper and more visible. Another option could be to clean up sticks on bottom edge, no big deal.

Did you attend a workshop at Bosque, tell me about the trip. Looking forward to seeing more of your work there.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm slowly picking through my images and hope I have one without the intersecting head. I like the weeds on the bottom. I tried removing them and thought it made the image less interesting.

No, I didn't attend a workshop. I did, on the other hand, see a bunch of BPN folks -- some in workshops and some not. I had a few unexpected days off pop up, and decided I wanted to see the place for myself. I am so glad I did! I've processed a few more today and will post some more as I work through them.

I agree with you on the weeds and like the natural setting. As the photographer you control the image and that is what you saw. I was thinking more about a clean bottom edge and this is alright.

I plan to go soon, when is a good time. I assume November and early fall.

OK, with my limited PS skills, I tried lightening the crown a bit and sharpening up the bird. Did it work at all?

I'm not really the right person to ask, as this was my first time. On the other hand, this was great! Lots of birds and great autumn colors. I would imagine that a lot of the BG color will be gone in a few short weeks. If you do go, follow the advice that Kerry Perkins gave me: BRING WARM CLOTHING! It was down in the low 20's at dawn (although it warmed up nicely during the days). I bought hunters' gloves with a thin shooting finger. The concept was good, but the gloves themselves weren't warm enough. I would recommend shooting mittens instead.

The repost is better. When the eye is sharp, clean and well lit the image becomes much stronger.

I plan to go next year, Kerry does not know it yet but I plan to get to him to go with me.

I can't imagine him fighting you about going!
