Just back from almost two and a half weeks of pure joy, but tough going in temperatures ranging from 36-42 degrees. Good locations throughout, working with some great Guides & Trackers and many thanks to Grant for his assistance in planning this over the past year.

This guy was waiting outside his den for the early evening to come and the temperatures to drop, before going out on the hunt. This den had no pups, but 400m away we found another den with three very tiny & timid pups, however if you tried to approach they would make a bolt for it, so we respectively left them.

Sounds like you had a great time Steve!!! I love the ears on these guys and the light looks good. Perhaps a hair more room right? Still a winner overall!

    Hi Steve
Wonderful detail in the bat-eared fox fur, ears and eyes. It is good to see you posting with the 1Dmk4. I like the diagonal lines in the sand in this image, and the soft light.
    cheers

Good light and good exposure. Wish for a bit more room on the right and a lower POV ( which is impossible from the jeep, I know- but it is a wish!!). I never even saw one of these guys during my 4 weeks in Africa. I love the ears,

    Gail

    Steve,
very nice job capturing such a fine image of this amazing little critter.
Lovely light, detail and posture. Excellent.

I saw plenty a few weeks ago in Kgalagadi, but never got a chance at a decent image. A pleasure to watch them hunting though.

    Welcome back Steve,
I trust you had a good time and a productive trip. Nice soft light in this one and I like how the ears and fore legs line up. The sand matches the fur color nicely (amazing how nature makes that work ) while the sprigs of green grass add some nice little bits of color.

Love those huge ears on that small frame . Did you manage any with him standing ?? Lovely this one for the closeup , and the 3D effect because of the DOF .

Thanks everyone and in a strange way, it's nice to be back, although I do miss the animals.

I've photographed these before, but not at such close proximity. The light went very quickly, from rich, 'golden' to a more flatter light sadly. Although shooting from the vehicle due to safety issues, you can achieve a lower POV with careful planning, however this female was hunkered down in a hollow close to their den and was far more co operative compared to the other den where the pups were, which I fully appreciate.

Hi Rakesh, yes I did, only a few as light & ISO was dictating the situation. Not wishing to stay too long around this location the foxes made the decision for us, as shortly after this was taken she got up and was shortly joined by the male who then went off hunting, will post that in the coming months.

    Thanks again.
