A Black Headed Heron arriving back at his nest. It is difficult to tell which are male and female as they both look very similar. I wish the bill wasnt merging with the far wing tip, but I feel the overall landing pose works well enough. Taken at 6.29am at the University of Pretoria sports grounds two weekends ago.

    Great scene/behavior you captured here!
Agree about the merge but "works well enough" for me too!
It's really nice that the incoming bird is against all sky.

That is some sharp focus there Stuart!
I don't mind the merge, it is a nice action shot and tells a story.
    Well done.
I would have preferred no OOF tree in the BG on the right, but you get the photo you can.

Excellent light and great interaction captured, Stu. Perfectly exposed and composed. I just love the expression of the bird on the left. Wing merging with the bill is not a big issue for me.

    Stuart,
This is great. The exp is spot on and I too, love the look on the perched bird's face. Tack sharp.I love interactive shots. My only nit with this shot is the OOF tree on the right. I would clone someof it out to make it less distracting,

    Stuart:

Sharp, well exposed, bird on left adds a lot.

My two thoughts have already been covered by you and others.

    1) Would prefer no merge and a better view of the far wing
    2) I like the tree in lower right corner, but wish it was a bit more separated from the bird. Gail's point to clone out a bit of it would probably work if you can get the contour and details to look good.

    Cheers

Great image Stuart! I like the interaction, sharpness and composition. I like Gails suggestion of downsizing the OOF tree.

Thanks a stack for all the feedback guys and Gail. I asked the landscaper to trim the tree. He was quite obliging.

Edit. Ive redone this with a slight trim.

I like the second post better Stuart, kind of tones that tree down a bit and doesn't draw the eye as much. Great action shot you got here though. I'm ok with the bill merging with the wing as you can still make a clear distinction betweent the two, that being said it doesn't bother me one bit. Great shot Stuart.
