Default Finally a Blastoff Crane !!! (now with repost)

Today was my 5th morning at the Bosque, and the first with a decent combination of light and Crane flight paths. They were very close to us this morning, so close that I had to shoot from between a couple of parked cars in the parking lot! I normally would have gone with my 500mm but I loaned it to ETL and OOTB mod Kerry Perkins this week. This image is almost full frame horizontally. The mountains were just starting to pink up but the light hadn't hit the birds yet; that explains the slow shutter speed and high ISO. A sharp eye is key on flight shots with slow shutter speeds IMO. The refuge has had a lot of good activity the past two days, so it looks like the Festival is going to be a success if this keeps up!

It was a great image. I loved the fact that the wing tip was not sharp.

Hey Doug, glad you are starting to see some action. It can be frustrating, I know. Good flight angle, and sharp where it counts. I love the diagonal two tone BG, sort of follows the line of the top of the far wing. Are those droplets below the feet ? Looking forward to more. Cheers.

Great coming-at-you shot. Love the dawn colors. Sharp on the bird's head. Nice job hand-holding the 600 and not clipping the wings at that distance.

That's exactly what they are Stuart. This bird had just lifted off from a pond where it had spent the night.

A dandy shot and lovely light. I also like how the bg light areas follow the wingspan of the crane.

Doug, great feel to this one. yes, eye is critical and you nailed it. Its always hard when BG is lit and the subject not...you've pulled it off masterfully.

Great colors in the BG. The blurred wingtips and tack sharp eye are the reason this image is so nice,

Doug - I really like the way you framed this image - almost pano. Nice that the feet also came out sharp. I think the unique colours really make this one pop.

Pretty much perfect. Love the positioning of the subject against the pink part of the mountain. See you soonly.

excellent pose and details, I would prefer less blur in the wing tips but with the 600 and giant bird you got no choice!

Terrific image, Doug. I like this one a lot. Gorgeous light, bg and flight angle. It's very sharp where it counts and I kinda like the blurred wings. I really like the comp too. Superb.

    Doug, wonderful flight action captured.
Agree with Geir, the blur in the wings show the motion well.

A Stunning image....The BG, honestly nothing to say, except, ITS PERFECT. The Blurring of the wings adds to the effect of motion (flight).

As per Ofer's excellent suggestion, here's a repost that uses almost the entire frame (14.2 out of 16 megapixels). What you see is all the pixels on the right side of the frame; the only pixels that aren't in this version are all on the left side of the frame. I think I prefer this version; what about you?

Wow Doug I love this! The BG is obviously awesome, and the slight wing blur works well. You did extremely well considering the low light!

I like the blurred wing tips for a sense of motion for fight shots.
