What an outstanding image. Superb feather detail, head angle, body angle, and phase angle! Compare this image to your other excellent image from Nov 11:

The phase angle in your Nov 11 image is lower, but the one here has enough of an angle to the sun to give beautiful shading and form to the bid's body and the micro shadows that adds detail in the feathers. Both images appear equally sharp as presented, but there is much more feather detail in today's image. Well done.

My sense of the importance of phase angle in bird photography began a few years ago and has become heightened with the many examples on BPN over the last three years.

Regardless of how relevant you think phase angle is, your image in this thread is outstanding and I say it is in large part due to the phase angle, and is a cut above your other image I referenced. If you had taken this image (at the top of this thread) at the phase angle of your other image I referenced. it would not have the same impact. You can call it chance, or you can try (when possible) to incorporate these facts into your strategy in the field.

I don't get out as often as you and many others on this site for bird photography as my work (in imaging science) takes up too much time. And when I do get time, i spend it photographing, and most of my processed images never get on my web site. I save many images for talks and publications. But none of this is relevant to the topic of the angle of light and image impact.

Thanks Roger, what I really want to say is that you base your comments on theory more than on your own experience in bird photography and that is wrong IMHO. Because you are a moderator people tend to read your comments as if it is the ultimate truth even if it can be totally unhelpful when it comes to bird photography.
I think enough was said about this already by both of us - you think that 'phase angle' is very important and I think that 'phase angle' is meaningless when it comes to bird photography. We will have to agree to disagree....

Phase angle and micro shading is a fact. Radiative transfer theory describes the effects of observed facts. Much like gravity is a fact while the theory of gravitation describes the observed properties of gravity. Best not to confuse the two.
