I've been at the Bosque for several days now, and I wish I could say that conditions are perfect. The birds are definitely arriving in numbers, so the morning blastoff is getting good. But there is essentially no corn to be found on either of the tour loops on the refuge. As a result there is no magnet to keep the birds at a photograph-able distance once they take off, and the birds scatter all over the place. The pickings get pretty slim by 7:30 am. They have federal law enforcement officers parked by the pond on the east side of the main road into the refuge to make sure that people park about 1/3 of a mile away from the pond. And they won't let you cross the tracks. This is supposedly a safety issue! They would rather have a bunch of people walk a considerable distance carrying heavy gear over an uneven surface with cars streaming by at 60 mph than let photographers contend with the handful of trains that traverse the refuge each day!
Enough of my rant. Here's a photo of a pair of American White Pelicans taken at the boardwalk the other morning. We see White Pelicans every year, but they don't typically hang around in the winter.
