Default Bosque Update: Not Your Typical Year or Image

I've been at the Bosque for several days now, and I wish I could say that conditions are perfect. The birds are definitely arriving in numbers, so the morning blastoff is getting good. But there is essentially no corn to be found on either of the tour loops on the refuge. As a result there is no magnet to keep the birds at a photograph-able distance once they take off, and the birds scatter all over the place. The pickings get pretty slim by 7:30 am. They have federal law enforcement officers parked by the pond on the east side of the main road into the refuge to make sure that people park about 1/3 of a mile away from the pond. And they won't let you cross the tracks. This is supposedly a safety issue! They would rather have a bunch of people walk a considerable distance carrying heavy gear over an uneven surface with cars streaming by at 60 mph than let photographers contend with the handful of trains that traverse the refuge each day!

Enough of my rant. Here's a photo of a pair of American White Pelicans taken at the boardwalk the other morning. We see White Pelicans every year, but they don't typically hang around in the winter.

    Doug:

Thanks for the info about Bosque, even if not the best. We need to elect a photographer as president so they can appoint the right people to be a bit more photographer friendly!

I must say, it is the first white pelican image I have seen from that location. I like the opposing poses and the peeking look form bird on right.

They are hunkered down like they are cold. What are the morning temperatures like?

    Cheers

Glad to see the Pelicans are still hanging out Doug.

Hi Doug, good exposure control which has brought out nice detail on both Pelicans. I also like the different poses of both pelicans, and is there a reason why the pelican on the right looks slightly pinkish to the one on the left. - or have I had a long day

Not especially cold; high 20s- low 30s. But the Pelicans aren't normally here at this time of year.

I like the 2 different poses and the peek-a-boo eye. Reflections add to the image. Good details in the whites,
    Gail
