Default Chitabe Wild Dog in Water

    Attached Images Attached Images

Canon 1Dmk4, Canon 300f2.8 IS, handheld. S/s 1.3200s at f5.6, iso 800. Metering Eval. Ai Servo, Single AF point selected. Location Chitabe, Okavango Delta, Botswana. This African wild dog was running around in the water, playing with its fellow pack members, and cooling off after feeding on an impala. Image taken in the morning, light just getting a little bright on the water splashes. I cropped, sharpened and processed in ACR and CS5.

    Two comments:

The dog is obviously enjoying every second

The light is sligtly harsh but I would have loved to have the opportunity to take photos like this.

    Grant,

Nice action shot, with good light, apart from the dogs right eye, have you tried lightening it a bit?

Thanks Dumay, Harshad, Ben and Ken
The dog was having a lot of fun and the light was getting a little hard to deal with in terms of high contrast and shadows. I find wild dogs a bit of a challenge in bright light when it comes to their coats, with dark fur, white fur and add splashing water to complicate it a bit further. Ken, I have lightened the eye and shadowed part of the dogs face almost one stop in ACR, and then a little more using Shadow/Highlight in CS5. Perhaps I could try push it a little more on the raw file without it starting to come undone.
    Thanks for the comments...much appreciated.
    Cheers

    Grant,

    Oh well, next time

Lets face it if you got the perfect shot there would be no reason to go out there as often as you can

Grant - This is great. The head turn, the airborne position, the splash, the tail straight out, it all works to give a great sense of speed and movement. Well done.

    Grant,
This is a great action frame, the water trail adds so much to the speed conveyed...along with the feet in the air. The color pattern, the raised tail and the light are awesome as well !

    Regards,
    Kiran

Grant, I'm really a big fan of yours. Your knowledge of animal behavior has translated into some wonderful images that always add that something extra. In addition to the great action pose here, I love the intense stare of the Wild dog.

Thanks Kiran, and Grace for your kind words. I am really a big fan of wild dogs and I am fortunate to be able to spend time with them often, and if this shot shows the dog off well, I am happy. This dog was 'locked-in" with that stare and raised ears on his buddies who were behaving manically out of the frame.
Thanks again for taking time to look and comment..much appreciated
    cheers

I would echo all the accolades already given on this image. You are certainly the wild dog 'master', your photos seem to isolate the behavior and character of the dogs so beautifully.

Super shot Grant. A nice of example of capturing movement/action without blur. Makes me think of a speedboat skimming across the water's surface.

Great action! Like the sharp eye and the water behind the hyena.

Thanks Vivaldo, Hilary, Steve, Morkel and Dan (by the way Dan this one is an African wild dog, and would be most upset if it knew you called it a hyaena ).
All your comments are much appreciated...Hilary, I enjoyed your play on words there,..and am looking forward to more dog images from all those members that are either visiting Africa right now or pretty soon on safari
    cheers

Hi Grant, nice action and great to see them running through the water, but sadly they have moved on now. However in 40 degrees +, I bet that water was nice.

    Great to see you posting.

    Cheers
