To the best of my knowledge this is the smallest bird in North America, aside from a few hummingbirds. And they don't sit still. My only prior images were blurry shots of them flitting around spruce boughs in dark woods. So I was happy to find six of them foraging on bare branches alongside a back road on Sunday. After I stood there awhile they came pretty close to my MFD, but they're so tiny that this is still a fairly large crop. Unfortunately an oof foreground branch blurred the bird's feet. And some fill flash might have helped. But I was pleased to get my first sharp images of the species. [Note that I recently applied some AF fine-tuning (+12) which seems to be helping the sharpness.] C&C always appreciated.

    Bill:

Neat calling pose, like the tongue, very sharp on head, well exposed.

I am sure you know this, but just in case others don't, you do have to do the fine tune for the lens bare and with each TC that you use with it. Some of the TCs are way out!

    Cheers

Thanks Randy. Good to point out. I fine-tuned the D7000/500/1.4X combo and found it to be way out, as you say. Now that I've realized how far out it was, I need to go back and do all the other combos. Neat thing is that the camera body recognizes each combo and applies the appropriate saved adjustment.

You weren't kidding when you said that these guys don't sit still. Congrats on getting a very sharp frame of one on a clean perch!
