This Sea Otter was photographed from a boat on the recently concluded Homer IPT with the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-1D Mark IV. The lens was resting on my old Domke bag that was resting on the gunnels. ISO 800. Evaluative metering at zero: 1/400 sec. at f/5.6.

I have lots of others of this animal eating a big crab but only the crab is sharp due to limited d-o-f and the fact that I was focused on the crab .

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

    Art.

At first sight this looks rather "odd" to me, which I think results from the water smoothed fur.

This seems to indicate a lack of detail, but detail is there as can be seen from the eye and whiskers.

Great job to get this from a boat

    Hi Artie
Neat image but although no doubt totally lifelike I'm more comfortable with a slightly more furry otter.
Have applied Topaz Infocus with sharpness setting of 20.
    Here is the result.

Artie - I like the clean dark bg and the wake of water being pushed by the otter. I like Ian's repost too.

Thanks Ian. I am not seeing a huge difference but yours looks fine too. What I love most about this image are the patterns on the face that resemble alluvial fans.

Stunning image Artie, if i have to nit pic a composition slightly higher up in the frame to include the whole reflection would have been great, but like i say thats just nit picking. This is really a great image

The first thing I noticed were the "alluvial" patterns .
Nice work Artie. I don't mind the smooth fur, and if I had to nit-pick I would agree with Brendon's nit-pick about the reflection .

Thanks all. I agree that the complete reflection would have been ideal. I had more on the bottom but the REFL just got weaker and weaker.... I am wondering if more of a pano crop from below would work.... In addition, framing with the 800 on a rocking boat was difficult .

Nice looking otter, Artie, nice details, like the whiskers and markings on face. Cropping in my browser, I think you may be right regarding more pano, it does seem to help focus better on that great face.
