1D Mark IV, Canon 800 f5.6, 1/3200, f6.3, iso 800, handheld
One from yesterday. The two youngsters are flying now which means I will only have one or two more opportunities to photograph them as they will move further away from the nesting site in the next week or so.
The BG is the ocean.
About 65% of full frame

Ken, I have only used my new Canon 800 f5.6 a few times. From what I have seen so far this is by far the best lens I have used for bird photography. I have owned and used all the following Canon lenses: 300 f2.8, 400 f5.6, 500 f4, 600 f4. As we all know for bird photography we need the reach so the Canon 800 f5.6 has that as well as beautiful optical quality, fast focus and not that heavy at all. Slightly more heavy than the Canon 500 f4. I am not a very tall guy with my 1.65cm and haven't been to the gym in ages and still find the Canon 800 f5.6 pretty comfortable to use handheld....
800 and handheld is a gr8 shot. lovely BIF shot.. Nice details.

The combination of the darker water and lighting really helps the bird pop. Nice detail, sharp, good DOF. I do like that there is some texture or variation in the BG, much more interesting to my eye than plain sky.
Head back our way helps, in a perfect world would prefer him angling towards us a bit.
Enjoy the young ones while you can. They grow up so fast (not just talking about birds)

Superb capture - especially hand-holding the 800. Great exposure, detail, bg. I know how fast these guys fly; can't imagine how you got him in the lens.

You guys amaze me HHing these beast lenses. it is an IS lens correct? I want one so bad. I just don't feel close enough with my 300 even with the 2x. I am considering the 500 or 600. Do you think I could get away without the IS? They sure are cheaper. Anyway this is another great shot . Did you have to lighten the darks in PS ? I like the open mouth

Cheryl, I don't really deserve the credit as handholding the Canon 800 f5.6 is really not that harder than HH the Canon 500 f4 IS which many photographers in here do on a regular basis. Doug Brown with his handholding the Canon 600 f4 - well that's another story....
