Default Swainson's Hawk - GET OFF MY PROPERTY!

    Hi everyone,

The photo below was taken last summer. A pair of Swainson's Hawks were nesting in a busy intersection full of cars and people. The condition that was cloudy; therefore, I added a bit saturation and light blue background. That day was also one of my first days with the Canon 7D, so I wasn't too familiar with the camera yet.

    Thanks for all C&C!

Nice shot Raymond. Really like the eye contact and perch. I seem to get shot of them while they are perched on hydro wires!!

That perch looks exactly like those where my local family of Swainson's hang out. I love the open mouth and tongue -- looks like he's chewing you out pretty vigorously. Like mine, looks like intermediate form Swainson's. It's a great shot, but looks a little bright and lacking contrast. With apologies, maybe something like this, darkened and contrast added.

excellent calling pose and intense look, I wish it had chosen a better perch and the IQ isn't great perhaps you could use a slower SS to lower the ISO.

Sorry, that might be a little dark, but yeah, a little bit more contrast might work.

Thanks! Actually, I made a mistake of writing the SS. It should have been 1/800 sec., not 1/1800. Because I was shooting at Av mode, I could have widen up the aperture a bit with f/6.3. However, at ISO 2500, I thought it wasn't too bad.

I see Ray, you made the best choice given the condition, hope you can see him again in good light!

Funny pose with the tongue angled to the side! Ron's repost as a bit strong, but yes some additional contrats, or at least some darkening of the blacks are in order. Great view of the menacing talons clutching the edge of the post...not the best perch I agree, but fantastic species that I hope to photograph some day.

    Nice one Ron,
The calling pose and tongue angle make this very unique, I am ok with the perch as its natural to these birds. But yes more natural is preferred. adding some points of black and a touch of contrast may improve this some. congrats on a fine image and experience!
