I took this image several years ago and as winter is aooriching I decided I would go through my images and cull out ythe weak ones, but I also am trying to select my favorites. This is one of my favorites, but I can't decide whether I like the color or black and white one. So here is a post of both as one image. Can you help me with your opinions? Shooting information as follows:
    Nikon D700
    850mm
    850mm (in 35mm film)
    Subject dist: 32m
    1/200 sec, f/5.6
    Mode: Av
    Metering: Spot
    ISO: 200
    White balance: Cool white fluorescent
    Flash: Off
    File size: 131MB
    Image size: 1842 x 2302
    Color space: AdobeRGB
    Saturation: Normal
    Sharpness: Normal
    Contrast: Normal
    Color profile: Adobe RGB (1998)

    Wheeler,

A good idea to put them side by side as this makes comparison so much easier (how do you do that?).

The colour version looks to have a slight magenta cast on my monitor but even given this, I actually prefer the B & W

Not being a B& W "expert" I find it a little difficult to advise you but perhaps a tad more contrast may make this pop better.

    Nice "bust" here, Wheeler.
    Overall IQ/detail is good.

I agree on the magenta cast - also some cyan and blue in there. And I agree on adding some contrast to the B&W, to make the tones more distinct.
In the repost I adjusted the "Color Balance" of the RHS away from magenta, blue and cyan for shadows, midtones and highlights. I also did some dodging of midtones and highlights and burning of shadows on the LHS (B&W). Lastly I added a hint of Local Contrast Enhancement overall, but masked it through so it applies more to the colour version and less to the monochrome version.

    What do you think, Wheeler?

Ken - easiest way I do it is to create a separate version (the B&W for instance). Now go extend canvas using the crop tool to about double the width. Now go back to the colour version, select the entire image, click on the "move" icon, then hold "alt" and drag it over to the empty space on the B&W version where you extended canvas. Align, and crop to fit, then flatten.

Morkel covered the processing tweaks so I will comment that I like the B&W version. To me the separation of the in focus portrait against the OOF BG is much more pronounced in the B&W version vs. the color version. Also to me, the shadowing ion the face is less obtrusive in the B&W version.

    Nice image Mac.

Thank you all for your comments regarding this posting. Imust say that the old bugaboo of the color cast has reared its ugly head again.I probably have more trouble with color casts than any other single thing. I amreposting the original image that I started with and am going to list the correctionsI made to the color version of the image.
    1. I copied the background layer and applied a NIKRAW sharpening layer.
    2. Added light to the shadows withhighlight/contrast adjustment. Wish I could remember the exact numbers, butthey are lost.
    3. Examined the image and decided there was aslight blue cast especially in the whites and shadows. Using a Color Balance adjustment as follows toremove the cast: I worked only on the midtones Red -+23, Megenta- 0, andYellow- -12.
    4. Using NIK Sharpener I sharpened it for output.
    5. Then I converted it to JPEG using Light Room.
I have looked at Morkel’s changesto the color version and I must say unless I really study it and even then Isee very little differences between mine and his version. I am beginning towonder if Robert's suggestion (that he made in an earlier image critique)that Imight be slightly color blind in some areas might have some validity. I havejust purchased a new monitor (a LaCie526) and I think it is giving me the right color. By the way I have tested tohave good color perception by a local doctor, so I’m at a lose to know what I might do except keeptrying. It is nice that the people on the site keep informing me of the problemas I am sure it will help my perception.
By the way Ken, I create the sideby side a little different than Morkel. I create a new file which is double thewidth of the original, then select all the image of the first image and pasteit into the new image and then do the same to the second. This works well, butpersonally I think Morkel’s is a little faster and easier. My way has theadvantage of creating a whole new image.
By the way Morkel, I can see amarked improvement in you repost of theb&w.
Thanks again for all your help. Ireally think I am improving, but sometimes not so much.

Usually prefer color over B/W but I also like the B/W version of this one better. Don't know why, just do.
