Default NY City Images - 1

    Attached Images Attached Images

Just returned from a 5 day photo workshop in NY City. Walking the streets and parks capturing images with form, color and gesture. Every day we had to display 10 to 15 images and critique each other. Everything is straight out of the camera and no post processing was allowed. Not even cropping.

I captured this shot walking by a bar in Manhattan. Using the MKIV, 70-200 2.8 using natural light (flash not allowed either), I will update the techs later.

There is a good use of the table and stools to make a graphic diagonal across the photo. The photo appears to have motion blur. I am not sure what the objective was to show 10-15 images straight out of the camera, was it something along the lines of "show us your contact sheet"? Short of showing how other people experiment and work towards capturing images, I would think that the artistic intent comes through with further processing of images and would be more fruitful than showing unprocessed images. Perhaps I am not understanding something.

    Chris,

This is an Eager To Learn forum. I thought it might be interesting seeing various teaching methods and learning from the perspective of others. The workshop is conducted by one of the best photographers in the world with over 50 years experience. I will share your comments with him.

Jeff, I agree with this sentiment. Perhaps I should have had a smiley icon.

Jeff, I like the diagonal & the leading lines to the man sitting at the bar. Perhaps placing him at the ROT area in the image would create a stronger image. This would also eliminate the flowers on the left that are poking into the frame. TFS

    Jeff,

Greetings. Had to look a few times to see it... Regarding a capture comment, I'd be inclined to say a 1/2 stop down, flatter horizon, one step in the direction of down the bar (oh, or zoom in slightly keeping the right edge).

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

    Thanks for the great feedback:

Andrew - I framed the shot on the bar stools. This was an interesting exercise. We were suppose to find color, form, gesture or any combination. Sometimes one can counter another too. Actually I was attracted to the light in this example it was a saloon in China town. Walking by, I asked if I could take a couple of shots. The guy would did not respond so I took s couple of pics and left.

Michael - I was bracketing one stop and this one looked best IMO.

Kostas - yes, post any image you want, of course in good taste.

This was HH and no cropping allowed, it is SOC.

i like the concept (now that it was explained to me) and the composition
but nothing is in focus to my eyes
if the guy was (in focus) it would help alot

    Jeff,

Sorry for the late reaction. I like this shot a lot. The slight out of focus look combined with the mustardy yellow light helps make this look painting like. If anything, I would take the flowers on the left side out, but that would require cropping bar ware out as well. The bar leads you into the picture, and the OOF feel lends itself to the experience of the patrons after being there awhile.
