This was an awkward shot to get, the light was bad, the surroundings even worse, our positioning was not the best and I had around 5 seconds before mum decided to depart.

    Ofer,

Thanks for your comment, much appreciated

I think the small level of file size is not really helping, here is a link to what I believe to be a better quality version

    Ken,

Wonderful image. Ofer, I do not see why you say the IQ is not great. The focus and exposure are both excellent, and the light is to the left giving nice form. What I would do is crop the image on the right side to just right of the adult's knuckles. The image and title give the feeling of protected, but the openness on the right works against that concept. Cropping out the space gives the impression of protection from all sides.

    Roger,

What a great idea, I have always been a little afraid of close crops, here's a repost a bit square, but that does not bother me.

Yep, IQ in the link does look better. Not crazy about the repost.I don't see the need to crop off the right and turn this into a square. If anything maybe a bit off the top to make it more of a horiontal as in this repost.

Regardless of the crop, I like this image a lot. It is very emotive.

    Ofer,

Cropping has always been my weakness, I have no idea what to now. But it is great to get different views and ideas

    Andrew,

Thanks very much for your comment, much appreciated

Ken, this image evokes a lot of emotion and it appears your hard paid off. I am going to have to go with Ofer on the IQ at this size. My first thought when I opened it before reading anyone's comments was that there was some details lacking in the baby's face. Might consider sharpening the face just a tad more and see how it looks. I looked at the post on 500px but that one looks as though it has a color cast, and I find this one far more appealing. As far as crops, I would go with the OP or Ofer's version, but probably lean toward a tad off the top.

Ken, as you can see there is no right and wrong. Roger likes the repost and I dislike it. I usually don't like square crop and in this case no matter how you'll crop it - the eyes will go to the baby's face so there is no need to "force it" with the tighter crop.

    Harshad,

I actually prefer the Sloth Bear images

    Marina,

You are correct I only noticed the cast today

    Ofer,
I agree that there is no right or wrong just personal taste

    Roger,

I wonder what else will be said?

Ken - love the eyes and the feel of this one. If the IQ of your original file will hold up to more of a crop what about something even tighter like this?

I actually quite like Rachel's concept of cropping so tight. I guess it works better for me because there is less of the bright fur on the left. Here is another option with a tight crop on the sides as per Roger and Rachel's suggestions but I have left the mother's hand on the top as it is an important part of the story IMHO.
    Interesting discussion!

Just my opinion, but I like more of the mother on the left side as it frames and protects the baby, adding to the title's concept. Cropping out the mother on the left leaves only a hand on top, which could also mean "settle down" or something like that.

Looking once again at all crops, I like Ken's first crop best, panel 5.

Five repost's I have never had so much interesting feed back and suggestions, thanks a lot.

From my own point of view I think the "safety" aspect is best expressed by more of the mum surrounding the youngster, I still like my original and the repost suggested by Roger best (even if this does result in a squarish result).

    Steve C,

I must admit I had not picked up on the "unibrow"

Very endearing image indeed! I like most of the crop suggestions for various reasons...though I feel Ofer's last vertical crop is the strongest for my tastes, but for this one to have even more impact I would have loved it if the baby's hand at the bottom was also included in the frame (tough with a fixed focal length, yes ). This way there would have been hands 'framing' the top and bottom of the image...

    Morkel,

Unfortunately the babies hand is partially obscured by a branch (pesky twigs again). No getting around this I am afraid.

The OP is the best of all of these.
Your first instinct was correct, IMO.
I like the larger view as it conveys more of the intent, I think.
Very nice and the IQ is very good also.
