Default First Image After Monitor Tweaks

    Attached Images Attached Images

Made a few adjustments to some monitor settings after moving the computer to a new room, some disappointing print results, and feedback on my last post, and was curious how this looked to others. A little background on conditions, this shot taken about 20 minutes after sunset in a shaded, mountain meadow. Any comments welcome (as always) but specifically on brightness and color appearance. 7D, 1-400L, f5.6, 1/160s, ISO 1600, +2/3 EC, monopod mount, small crop all around.

    Steve,

I presume you have opened your box? Did the test image change much?

This is a difficult image to test with, on my monitor it appears a little dark around the head, but opening it up may result in the body and the small areas of white appearing too bright.

Interesting expresion with the slightly closed eye.

    Cheers

    Ken

Hi Steve, without actually being there with you, or at you PC it is difficult to make an accurate observation, however...

The colours look OK, and reflect the time of day. Viewing the image on the web and the image in PS side by side there is no colour shift, perhaps a slight drop in the Red or Magenta, but again all personal choice tweak and how you have set both camera & RAW output as you can calibrate this to you camera. Overall I think it's OK and reflects of the scene, also you are looking at something with a fairly slow SS and hi ISO. When i print I use printer profiles configured to the respective output, ie paper or printers so I know how they match, do you use profiles for the paper you use?

    some disappointing print results
Have you changed or unchecked any of the PS printer dialog boxes in the move (easily done), does PS colour manage? Have you printed an existing image to compare to, to exclude the printer? Have you looked an an existing image you know well on screen to see if there is a colour shift to see if it's the screen? is the monitor in front of a window, or is the window behind you?

Might suggest posting this in another part of the Forum too, to get a wider POV in relation to how it 'visually' looks, as it might be going away from the general critique here?

Hope it gets sorted quickly, buts still like the image.

    Hi Steve,

Not knowing your intent, it is hard to judge color. It seems OK on my calibrated monitor, though I find the contrast a tiny bit high for my taste. Color of the grass looks good. The trees in the background are a little dark and with their nice color would add to the image if brightened. The closed eye detracts for me. I always check the histogram of different areas. For average brightness, the histogram should peak in the middle. If you want somethngn to appear bright, the histogram should be above middle. Just select an area and the histogram for that area shows (in photoshop).

Thanks guys for taking a look and giving me some feedback. I know there's a lot of variables to consider when asking this kind of question, was mostly looking to NOT hear something like "Oh my, that doesn't look good at all". Mission accomplished as far as that goes.

    Ken,
Haven't got that far yet. Just did some changes using the built in iMac calibration. Doing a little more research before delving further. As for the expression, caught this one mid-chew .

    Roger,
Thanks for the selective histogram tip.

    Steve,

Just to let you know that I calibrated our travelling companions Apple Air? laptop before we went up to Zimbabwe, the improvement was extremely noticable.

Hi Steve, everything looks good from this side, with regards to exposure/brightness and colour. I love the chewing expression.
