I don't know what else it could be but some of the facial markings have thrown me off a bit. That and it seemed noticeably smaller than Song Sparrows I am used to.
Hi Dave- The overall look of this bird and the fine, head and facial markings and well-defined streaks on the upper breast and flanks of this bird suggest a Lincoln's Sparrow.
Yes, I think Lincoln's too Dave. Note the shorter tail than Song and the crisp, fine streaks on the flank. The head usually shows a flatter profile but the angle of the head turn has thrown that off. Might help if you indicated when and where.
Thanks John and Dan.
Now that you have called it, and I have checked my books I am sure you are correct.
Dan I took the photo about a week ago not far from home in SW BC. It was hanging out in some tall stalked wild flowers/plants on the edge of an over grown field. Just behind me and over a dyke would be a salt water marsh and Boundary Bay.
The habitat, actions and size are right on the mark. It stayed pretty much in the tangle of plants while a Song Sparrow popped out to have a look see.
