This one was taken in Kenya at the end of September. Not having had a lot of luck with Kingfishers in the UK, I was delighted to spend some time with the African varieties.

This is probably the closest, in terms of appearance, to the UK resident.

I would be interested to know your thoughts on the out of focus foliage in the background. Is this a distraction or does it give context to the environment?

    Austin:

The colors are great, sharp and well exposed.
Perch a bit massive, but tight cropping has downplayed it.

I like the concept of the plants in the background, but would prefer them not directly behind the head.

A step or two to your left might have eased the merge, if possible.

    Cheers

I'm with Randy on this one Austin, a move to the left would have placed the foliage better in frame and avoided running behind the subject. Nice to see you posting again.

PS Go to the NHM for the Wildlife display, it's worth it next time you are in town as the book doesn't really reflect the images IMHO.

    Austin,

Speaking as someone who has tried for many years to capture this elusive bird, I think this is a great image, OK the BG is not the best, but for me at least it does not detract from the subject itself.

It is very rare indeed to find this bird in an open pose.

I also appreciate how difficult it is too change your position easily, were you in a boat?

    Cheers

Great bird, colours, perch. I love the feathers of the raised crest. I'm with Randy on the BG vegetation and suggestion (if that would have been an option). I would also clean the whitish spot near the tip of the bill.
