hi. You see those small triangles on either side of the histogram? Click on the right one and the areas with highlight clipping will appear red. regards~Bill
Shreeni- I notice on your ACR sliders that you have moved the Recovery slider to the right a significant amount. So you probably started with lots of blown whites right?! In these situations, with a subject like this that is lit fairly flatly, a good method is to first move the Exposure slider to the left which will move the whole histogram to the left. This can darken up shadow areas too much so don't go too far. You can use some Fill light to brighten the shadow areas that are a bit dark. Then, finally you can move the Recovery slider to the right if you need to. Don't be too heavy-handed with this slider as it can cause artefacts at edges.
This is what I started with. Despite trying to recover some detail by using Recovery in ACR, I did not get much out. So wanted some help to bring back feather deatils if I had recorded it..
The Recover slider does not recover detail in dark areas, it moves the histogram to the left and attempts to Recover blown highlights, which you don't have to begin with. IN fact the image is under-exposed.
Take a look at the Histogram. There's a big space to the right indicating the under-exposure. The way you correct for this is to move the Exposure slider to the right. You do not need to use the Recover slider at all in this image.
Thank you John. I am slowly, at-snails-pace, seem to get the idea of when-to-do-what
I tried your above suggestion on below and I now realize 400/5.6 + 2x @ f11 will translate to soft images. Maybe I need to find a place closer birds or have to convince the wife to get me longer glass; though the former will win I guess
