    Default Three Does

Why do I keep thinking about THE SHINING ? An early evening encounter, I snapped this as these three were wandering away from the rest of the harem. Only got this one before the male came and broke up the lineup. Wish the shadowed ridge wasn't behind them but a lower angle wasn't possible and I just didn't feel like taking it out. 7D, 500/4, f4, 1/160s, ISO 1600, +1.33 EC, HH from vehicle, small crop off top and sides.

This is simply fantastic!!! I guess I am not a very sophisticated person/photographer but for me this is REAL nature photography....

Steve, I love this image. Very nice pose that all three should be in focus (especially at f4) and lined up nicely with the same HA on each. Love the colors. I agree with your comment on the ridge in the BG, but it isn't a deal breaker because the viewer is focused where they should be on the eyes of the antelope. Well done.

    Steve,

I can understand why you are thinking of the Shining, this image has an almost ghostly feel to it, and those staring eyes

You have posted so many fine images of this beautiful antelope that it would be hard to pick the best, but this has to be up there

This is really a fine image. Believe me, the ridge in the BG never got my attention till I read it in the description.

    Hi Steve,
The symmetry in your composition is wonderful. Good detail and a wonderful background.
    Thanks for sharing,

Hi Steve, just used the 'dodge' and 'burn' tools in Photoshop to reduce the effect of the line. You can easily do a much better job in more than the 1 minute it took me...
These tools are acceptable by the big competitions - don't really understand why....
I could easily eliminate this line completely with other PS tools which are not allowed.... Go figure...
    Also converted to sRGB.

Steve - love this. Fantastic head on poses, pleasing tones and I don't know if I would have even noticed the ridge had you not pointed it out. Great job on converting your only opportunity at the shot.

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

    Ofer,
Thank you for your repost as well. Quite a difference from the original. Makes me wonder what people have been seeing for the last three years from my posts. I followed those threads you were involved in with the color space issues but since no one had ever made comments about my images I assumed I was good. After sending some prints to the local print shop (first prints I've made in over three years) and being thoroughly disappointed in how they turned out, it seems I have some research to do on what I'm doing with my workflow and monitor settings.

    Hi Steve,
As far as I undestand, only people who use Internet Explorer (like me) will see a difference between sRGB and Adobe RGB so maybe most of the members in here use a Mac.

Steve, this is one killer image. I find your original post truer to the actual colors. Frankly, the line didn't bother me at all.

I have to say ditto to Marina's comments. This is excellent Steve, a great moment getting all three looking right at you.

    Steve,

Really outstanding and really unusual which makes this so special. Where was this?

I do think dodging the line behind to reduce the impact would be good.

    Possible contest winner.

Hi Marina, I haven't changed anything in the colours/contrast etc. I just converted to sRGB as should be on the web. When you open the image in Photoshop you will see the colours as shown in the repost.

Super threesome here Steve, love the soft light and eye contact too. BG not a problem at all.

I do feel their heads are lacking some fine detail present in your other postings - did you do much NR on ISO-1600 here, and if so did you apply it to the animals?

Regarding colour space, I have created a shortcut in PS (pressing F5) converts the image to sRGB and changes the depth from 16-bit to 8-bit. This is always my final step before saving the image for web posting and ensures I have the colour space sorted.

    Hi Ofer:

I understand on the conversion and convert everything myself. However, just on looking at the 2 posts and not reading anything, I do feel that the colors of the original post look more natural to my eyes here. I just went by what I saw on the screen in front of me.

Hi Steve, not sure where my post went on this, but will try to retrieve my thoughts from the memory banks.

Love the colours, the defused soft, rich tones & hues and the variety of oranges within the image, however the image to me has an almost illustrative look & feel, that might be the ISO coming through? It's as if these guys were wearing a football kit, as the markings are almost identical in every way, just clones of each other. Because there is so little blacks in the image, where they appear they certainly give form & structure, like an artist would do if they were constructing this image, a nice effect. Just really like the almost minimalist content of the image.

The ridge doesn't bother me either and prefer the OP, I feel it gives more context to the image and without it there seems something lacking.

Another cracking image of this species Steve.

Hi Steve, a bit late to the party but how about 'The Three Amigos' Love the soft light here, and thats just your style, late afternoon light. Perfect positioning from all three, great eye contact, and of course, the surrounding grasses compliment them very well. Congrats on a fine image.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. Reinforces my belief that I don't have a clue about what people will like in posted images . Posted this one to share and show off some of the subtle differences in head shapes and markings of these animals.

    Ofer,
I changed a box on my color preference settings in PS and also in DPP. Should correct any future problems you or anyone else may see with my postings. Thanks again for the repost.

    Roger,
These were captured here in Colorado out on the eastern plains while driving some dirt roads. Recent poachings prevent me from posting more details than that.

    Morkel,
Lack of detail in the face is probably due to the combination of very low light, smoothness of the facial fur, and my exposure to just under cooking the whites. I did run some NR on the face (a much reduced level than on the BG) as I was going for a softer overall look on the image to add/enhance the feel of the early evening time. I've been thinking about finally upgrading from my trusty PS Elements 3 to a more modern version of one of the CS programs as I've been noticing more banding in my cleaner BGs with the 7D.

    Steve K.
Always appreciate seeing nice, sharp images (especially my own) but also don't have any problem with taking some of mine towards the illustrative side (always liked drawing and coloring when I was a kid, just never got any better at it ).

I'm very late but it's really an outstanding and memorable shot and so I wanted to add my cheers. I'll be trying to "show off subtle differences in head shapes" for years now.
