A young Elephant rediscovers the splendours of the waterhole. Taken at Ngweshla waterhole, Hwange National Park 5th September 2011.

For this shot I was sitting on a camping chair near the waterhole our regular afternoon treat

    EOS 1D MkIV

    500mm F4 IS hand-held

    F7.1, ISO 800, 1/1250, EV +0.67

For some unknow reason this is nowhere near as sharp as my JPEG looks in PS?

Lovely behaviour shot! Splash is great! Taking it from a lower shooting angle and getting a more blurred BG could have been even nice IMHO.

    Offer,

This waterhole is in a natural depression, getting lower was not very possible without getting too close for safety, I see what you mean though.

Ken - fun shot and good timing. Light looks a little harsh Do you have any wider shots of playtime?

Ken, I like the pose. As Rachel said, "Fun". The shot looks sharp to me. "our regular afternoon treat" - I am jealous!! Maybe one day I will get to see this in person. TFS.

Good title Ken. Can't help but smile looking at this one. Like the pose and of course the spray of muddy water. Looks plenty sharp as presented to me.

Thamks everybody, I think I must jave had a fuzzy moment when posting this as it looks sharp now.

    Rachel,
An interesting question, I originaly did this as a landscape then somebody suggested a portrait may be better, I really think I like the wider version

    Hi Ken,

Great action! The sun appears to be above and straight behind you. That makes the background bright, and shadowless, without form. I suggest darkening the top half of the image (the bright background). Darken a little, but not too much as you want the mud to still show well.

Ken - I like the wider view too, though it is tough to decide which I prefer, I would probably print both and then decide.
