    Default Spring Black Bear

Bear season is coming to an end for me and while I still have an imagination full of images I never got, I am slowly editing my way through this year's encounters and finding a few successful images, IMO.

This has to be one of my fav images and fav bear.

    Canon 7D and 400mm F5.6 @ f5.6, 1/640 ISO1250

Looking to post this on my new website soon but wanted to see what you all thought.

    Thanks

    Jamie

    Jamie,

This is wonderful, full of innocence and inquisitiveness, the grass in the mouth adds so much.

Wish we had Bears here in Africa , but that would be a little greedy

    Hi Jamie,
I like the detail, the inquisitive look in the eye and your composition.
I would have tried a wee bit more space on the RHS, but otherwise a wonderful image.
    Thanks for sharing, Mark.

I love this image, the techs look great the diagonal line of the grass adds to a strong composition the bears expression and the grass in his mouth puts it over the top for me. I would be proud to have it on my web site

Very nice image. We have a few bears near where I live but they are very, very elusive in this area... plus the forest and it's undergrowth is very, thick. In other words, I'm jealous.

    Thank you everyone.

Sid: I know you like this and knowing that makes me feel very proud given your talent.

Ken: I agree, don't be greedy. I wish we had Rhino and Leopards, Lions, Elephants, Crocodiles, Hippos, and the rest but that would mean I would never leave my own back yard and travel the world in search of such wonderful big beasties. Thanks for the comments.

Mark: Thank you, I do have some more space on the right but this was cropped to a 2:3 ratio.

Gen: Thanks. I am busy preparing a lot of images for my revamped website coming 2012. The diagonal grass does it for me as well and I like how the bear has a curious look but is not looking at me.

Bob: Do the bears come out of the forest much to feed on the berry bushes in clearings? I spend a lot of time waiting for opportunites like above but it helps that I have a few regular hot spots that I can rely on during peak berry season.

You know I like this Jamie! Love the curiosity as mentioned and the diagonal line of grass makes for a dynamic compositional element...
Small nit - I felt the image (and the bear in particular) as posted have just a hint of a magenta and cyan cast...which I toned down using selective saturation in the repost...WDYT?

I've yet to find any open areas locally with berry bushes.

There is a very, very large private farm not far from here (large as in big enough to be a wildlife reserve of state park) that has a reputation for bears being out in the open frequently. I'm getting closer to gaining access to that facility.

Jamie - My favorite (so far). High cuteness factor with the inquisitive look. I agree the diagonal line of the fg grass as well as the hint of grass in the mouth really enhances the image.

Jamie, great image here, congrats! I like the pose and the BG. I like the diagonal line in the FG but also the diagonal in the BG going in the opposite direction adds to it as well. Very fine capture here.

Thanks Morkel I am on a laptop at the moment and the changes seem so subtle that I can't pick them up on this screen. I'll check later on my desktop. I always appreciate your comments and suggestions.

    Thanks mate

Bob, a couple of our local black bears were shot on the local farm land so I hope your locals are more tolerant and less greedy for black market sales of bear parts. The farm land will certainly be a safe bet for making clear images. Good luck.

Thank you very much Rachel and Tom. I am happy to come away with a dozen good images from my season with the black bears. Can't wait until next year.

Hi Jamie, good to see you back and this for me is your best to date. Like the emerging angle through the grass, comp and detail.

Hope we can hook up at some point in Feb at YVR, or in March downtown.

    cheers
