Giraffes are usually tricky to frame properly due to their odd shapes, and in South Africa you normally find them in bushy areas. I liked the play of the first morning light on the giraffe's neck and head and the tree in the background here...as well as the autumn colours on the leaves in the BG.
Taken near Punda Maria, Kruger National Park, South Africa.

It really pops out of the photo Morkel.
    A cool look and expression.
I think a bit of desaturation of the BG would make it stand out even more.

I like the composition on this one Morkel and the slight head turn, looking to camera might have not been so go. If the colours are as good on the laptop as the calibrated one then it has a nice early morning feel to it. Personally I might just tone down the two marks on the tree trunk. I like the warmth the image conveys.

On a side note Morkel, would highly recommend you visit the Veolia Awards road show when it hits SA, breathtaking images.

Like the fresh morning feel of the image and also the interesting composition. Lovely environmental BG to round it off. Impressive looking mane on this one.

The shallow DOF helps to pop the subject from the background, well done.
I think the subject placement is slightly off for the comp presented.

When will Canon rival the ISO performance of the D3s?? Your move to Nikon is allowing you to make some amazing photos Morkel in the low light.

Did you manually blur the BG at all in photoshop?

    Thanks everyone...

Jamie - no blurring done to BG, only one round of NR.

Thanks for your honest critique Chas. What would your placement look like? Less space on the left?

Nice light and a great 3 D look here. IQ looks real good. I don't even bother reading your ISO settings anymore

    Hi Morkel,

Very nice light on the giraffe, but I find the bright sky shining through the branches distracting. I would darken that. Regarding composition, I like the diagonal line of the neck, but there is a lot of blurred space on the left. This could make a nice vertical crop, cropping off the left side of the image.

    Thanks Steve and Roger.

Roger, I was unsure at first so tried a vertical crop...I just preferred the one with the 'extra space' for some reason.
Here is a vertical crop, and I also implemented your suggestion to tone down that bright sky (thanks)

    Morkel,

I like your original. I would consider adding little more space on the right to avoid subject coming out of corner.

    Morkel,

The repost is very good. But now I'm torn between the tighter crop and the spacious feel of the original. I think both work well. I would reduce the background just a little more (and do it on both versions).

    Nice catchlight too.
