    Default The rut is starting

Taken quite early as the sun began to rise and break through the very misty morning in this clearing just in front of the woods. The ground was absolutely soaking wet with the heavy dew from the night and the overall conditions gave a nice atmospheric feel as the Stags bellowed out, echoing all around.

I wanted a tight crop to emphasis the 'rack' and the truncated legs are not an issue IMHO, likewise the surrounded hinds. Wish you could post sound with an image.

This is a very compelling image Steve. I like the hatchet lighting, the debris on the antlers and the open mouth of the bellowing stag. I agree with you about the truncated legs & hinds. TFS.

The dramatic lighting makes this such a strong image Steve you can almost hear the bellow. The moment nicely captured and I like the bits of earth and grass on the antlers and the fact that the herd is shown around him.

Agree with you on legs. Action pretty much locked my focus. Killer timing Steve.

    Hi Steve,
Impressive looking subject. Whole legs not necessary for this, its about the rack and face. The incomplete animals in the back provide a sense of herd. I hesitate to mention this since I haven't ever calibrated my monitor but I see a slight greenish cast to the coat and a bit of blue in the shaded face (perhaps due to conditions?). Be curious to see what you think about my repost (mostly to see if I need to break my Spyder 3 out of the box ). Being a mod (and owner of the pic), delete upon your request .

    Steve K,

I can see Steve C's point here and think his repost, looks much better.

But I suppose it is all down to your monitor and its calibration

    Steve C,

If the Spyder 3 is similar to the 2 then it is relatively easy to use although it takes a little time, I would reccomend giving it a go.

I like the repost for the processing, but the capture and the comp and framing is exquisite.
I can hear the bellowing and the light is fantastic.
The grass on the antlers is a really nice touch.

Hi Steve, thanks for taking the time and no worries about doing a rework. The green/blue cast is probably from the early morning and I wanted the col temp to reflect that.

As Peter Delaney & I are meeting up today with an exchange of work etc, I will get his reaction from the actual prints too, so that might add another twist.

Thanks again and many thanks to all who have replied.

Can't comment on the colour Steve as I am not on an ideal monitor...Do love the pose and the early morning mood...
The legs are not a big issue, but I can't help but wonder if you have vertical composition with no "chopped" legs at the bottom (starting at the chest)?

I think the original retains a better sense of the morning light IMO. Impressive rack.
