I have photographed brown bears throughout AK. The background can make all the difference in the success of an image, and it is the main reason I change locations from year to year.

    Chas,

This is a real beauty, great pose but what makes it really special for me is the background

Great action pose, Chas, love the wet fur, color, and surrounding habitat.

    Indeed, Chas!
Love the BG here, especially the purple flowers. Great pose and low angle too...IQ stellar as per usual...

    Excellent photo.
The water dripping off is really a nice touch and the flowers really add to the photo.
The FG water gives a nice sense of movement also.

Lovely image Charles , like the action captured and the dripping water, but as mentioned the BG makes it. A great environmental feel to this image. TFS

    Hi Chaz,
I like the lovely background, the detail and the low POV.
The water gives me a bit of a headache as it would appear to be flowing level or slightly upwards from right to left, so I would give this image a tadd more CCW rotation so that the flowing water does not distract from the bear. Otherwise thanks for sharing with us all.

Chas - I like the raised paw and the low pov. I agree that the bg, particularly the purple flowers, adds a lot.

    Mark,

First thing I do when placing the tripod is level the base. The 7 knot rapids make for waves, high and low spots, particularly around the boulders in the river. But, this is really trivial.

Charles - sorry I'm coming in a bit late here (spend too much time over on the avian side ). First, I love the photo. All the good things have been said above. The one thing that strikes me is how centered the subject is. Over in avian that would likely get pointed out as a nit. So I am wondering what your though process was (knowing your usual high standards I expect you did make this a deliberate decision) on choosing to center the bear - are you letting the background play a more prominent role in the composition?

    Dan,

Thanks for chiming in. And, good question.

Many tend to take what some say and consider it as gospel. I say "Definitives have no place in Art"
I often place a the subject in a compositional position so that the image feels dynamically balanced.
In this image the head is centered, but the overall body is not, being more to the left.

    Best,

    Chas
