Swamped with work at the moment so finding less time than anticipated to edit some recent avian captures.

This is from our August trip to the northern Kruger National Park. It's always a treat getting these guys out in the open.

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
    f4.0 @ 1/800 SS @ ISO-400
Could probably have stopped down to get the tail in focus, but I wanted all the emphasis on that eye

Beautiful bird and surroundings! Not sure I would want to fall in to that tree, those thorns look vicious! The detail and clarity is very nice. Like the turn back look, sharp, the red eye and ruffled feathers. Nice job.

Good choice of f-stop. Fine bokeh and superb light and detail. Thorns a big plus.

    Hi Morkel,

Nice capture, love the background and the details in the head. It may have been nice to get the tail more in focus, but I think this one works very well also.

Very nice Morkel. It's sharp where it needs to be and that red eye and gruff look really draw you in to the bird. Terrific lighting and beautiful background. I wonder about a touch more room on the right.

I love these weird (to me) African birds.
I like the comp and the focus, Morkel.
It is where it should be in a portrait photo like this.
The tail would have distracted from the emphasis, which is the head and eye.
    Very nice.

    Thanks for your comments, folks...
Believe me it's not nice stepping into one of these thorns!

Hi Mork, we have one of these guys resident in our garden - do you think I can get a clear shot of him. Love the eye here, together with the colours of the coucal. I do like that BG. ( off to Kruger on friday for a long weekend )

Wow!! An excellent image. Love the head turn and wonderful background. Sharp, and those thorns do look pretty vicious.
    Well done.
