Crazy light, the bird was actually in shade, but an intense alpenglow reflection from surrounding foliage.
    I actually toned it down.
I thought they only ate bugs and the like.

    Dan,

The moment based image is just superb. The prey is plus here but somehow the away angle is little to think.
ISO 320 ? wish you may have consider doubling up to freeze the head as well.

Well said, Patel. Not sure it's motion blur on the head -- plane of focus seems to catch the vent, with the head a little behind perhaps. But it's a really striking image. Looks like you're onto Killdeer with a vengeance now. Looking forward to more. Comp, exposure, color, BG are killer, but the gunk in the foreground is unfortunate.

I like the sweet light and nice BG, the bird is slightly angled away from us and there is some blur in the head.

Besides of looking away a little bit, this shot is really nice. Nice pose of bird and sweet colours and light!

Great colors of the water and nice low angle but I must agree about the ISO to get more freeze on the head,

I can live with the bird being slightly angled away...but the head is not frozen....a real pitty because everything else is fine.
