I did not do any special work on the eye... also took me some time to realize that they are indeed brown in the right light...

Hi Rudi, good angled take off, and Im glad the beak is separated from the far wing. Amazing that 1/2500 doesnt freeze more of the wings, and I do like the BG colour. I would maybe add a touch of black to the head and near wing.

Real nice shot. I really like the pose, sweet background, great head angle.
    Well done.

Nice action shot Rudi. The OOF tail and wings, but sharp eye, seems to accentuate the speed. Great BG and I like the way you have set up the comp, with the bird diving into the space. Very nice indeed.

Spectacular pose and nice position in the frame. Overall too light for me. Took a bit of green out of the blacks and neutrals by adding magenta to them in Selective Color.

Nice take-off action and pose, and nicely composed. Harsh light was handled best you could. Although sharp in the face I do find the fine details a bit lacking...perhaps a big crop and/or a bit of subject movement affected this. Still an appealing image.

Not a big crop at all Daniel.. Maybe 70% of the orginal... had to add some canvas to the right and removed the perch bottom left which was somewhat distracting due to the angle of the light and DOF...

What details do you find lacking Daniel? Will be interesting to know...

Can you maybe explain in more detail to us novices that whole procedure Arthur...? New at CS5 at need some assistance...

Hi Rudi, Our Digital Basics file was written just for you . Full details there. Here is the short course: go to Selective Color and choose BLACK from the dropdown menu. Then move the BLACK slider to the right to add a bit of BLACK to the BLACKs making them a bit richer. Then move the MAGENTA (the opposite of GREEN) slider to the right a bit to take out the green from the BLACKs. Repeat with the NEUTRALs from the drop down menu. Usually it pays to be judicious making small slider adjustments but when adding CYAN to REDs to reduce the saturation I sometimes go as high as 90!

Selective Color is a powerful tool; you can learn a ton by experimenting. Digital Basics has that lesson plus my complete digital workflow plus dozens and dozens of great Photoshop tips....

Hey Rudi, it's hard to explain. It just feels like the detail is a bit coarse, the circumference around the eye seems a little jagged, ...perhaps its the sharpening. It's almost as if NR was applied and then sharpening over that...hard to explain. The image looks properly focussed, so not sure why I get that impression.

Will surely have a look at that Arthur... Seeing that is just for me... Just one thing - It seems like the majority of images in BPN's portfolio are stationary birds! I thought the challenge was the opposite?

Still need to improve my processing skills, so will still try to get "the shot" and post on BPN for the time being, to improve those skills not associated with skills in the field with camera in hand...

Daniel, I do not know how to do all those fancy things you are talking about! Did a mere levels adjustment, added some contrast and vibrance in CS5... Maybe the angle of the light that came from 3 o'clock has something to do with that...

Yes, photographing birds in flight and in action is a huge challenge. That why I leave it to the young and talented for the most part. I do try and once in a while I get lucky.
