Default Elephant colour - Grey to Black !!! NAH !

This young elephant's colour blew me away . Having always seen shades of grey to black on an elephant , this one was a huge surprise !!! The light was real real bad , so please excuse the quality .
He was frequenting the waterhole , and almost owning it , till one Cape Horn Buffalo decided to teach him some manners and chased him away !!

Camera : Canon 1D Mk III
    Lens : Canon 600mm f4 IS
    Shutters : 1/80
    Aperture : f 5.6
    Speed : ISO 6400

    Cheers,
    Rakesh

Rakesh, you are certainly testing your camera here with ISO 6400 and a ss of 1/80 but remarkably the photograph appears to have reasonable IQ (all things considered). The low light and lush vegetation has certainly given the image a very rich colour which may look better slightly desaturated, although without losing the red tones of your elephant. You don't say where this elephant was photographed but looking at the colour of the dust on the elephant and the lush surrounds it looks as if it could be at Ol Pejeta or somewhere similar. Perhaps a bit redder than I've seen, but certainly interesting colour.

I like the water drips from the curled tip of the trunk and the comp is quite nice too.

    Rakesh,

Firstly I must congratulate you on getting such a fine image from a MkIII at ISO 6400, will you let us know your secret?

Colurs of Elephant are often dependant on the colour of the mud and dust thay bathe in, this can range from the White Elephants of Etosha to the red colouration you have captured here which isthe most common colouration, I have seen it in a wide variety of places ranging from Madikwe (South Africa) to the shores of Lake Kariba. It certainly makes for a very interesting subject

@ Hilary : This was at Aberdare , and we reached the waterhole late in the evening and the cloudy conditions just made it worse . It seems the low light has made it look saturated , because this just 'off the camera' , as far as levels or saturation is concerned .

@ Ken : Whenever I shoot hi ISO , I ensure that I do not crop the image at all . I have seen that it generally holds the IQ , esp , if you do not have very dark tones in the image . Not so much of a secret , I guess !!

Loving the richness of colour here Rakesh, good ISO quality from the MkIII as stated. Would wish for a tad more on the top and especially bottom of frame here.

Thanks Rakesh, I'm interested that your Aberdare elephants carried such a red colour as mine were quite grey so I think you were very lucky to get such interesting changes. Although there is some quite red earth through there so I suppose it shouldn't be so surprising. Well done.

Hi Rakesh, certainly this is a testimony to how good the camera is a hi ISO, congrats. The red colour reminds me of the Elephants in Samburu.

Just would prefer more space all round.

Everyone has mentioned the techs here, well done on that Rakesh! Lovely rich colour captured too. I am with Steve on a tad more space, but from your previous comment I gathered this is FF?
