From a trip we took to Florida last spring. Talk about good luck...he (or she) appeared just as the light got absolutely beautiful.

This is absolutely stunning, Grace. Perfect light, amazing pose and fantastic setting with the somewhat turbulent water.
    Wow, what an image!

The light in this image is stunning Grace! I think that the unusually choppy water compliments / contrasts the elegant pose very well.

Beautiful pose, beautifully sharp. Beautiful light. All it needed was some more hormones. I'd go for a bit off the bottom and a bit more on the top. My preference is almost always for more room above than below (unless you have a good reason...)

Yes, this bird seems to be celebrating the appearance of that sweet light. Very nice on all counts Grace. Less on bottom should lower the center of gravity.

Absolutely killer light and pose here. Can you image had this RE been in breeding plumage? I have to agree on some off bottom.

The crop is fine with me.

Gorgeous image - love the timing and colours. Composition seems fine but when I read about the crop off the bottom I had to agree in retrospect.

Graceful (pun intended) pose, sweet light, and excellent details. Top notch image. I'd go for a little crop at the bottom, too.

    Grace:

Lovely warm light, sharp, great pose. Like the tiny white morph feather showing on his left wing.

I am a bit distracted by the slanting pink band at the top, makes me think the image isn't level.

    Well captured.

    Cheers

Grace, excellent sharpness, and I do like the pose and full wingspread. The light in this is exquisite.

Great image Grace, as said by others - light, subject, pose, IQ. I learned from comments here that more room at the top is desirable - good to know that.
As Randy mentioned, the band in the horizon makes it look like it may need leveling.

Thanks Everyone. Appreciate the crop suggestion, will do. As for the need for leveling....would not the bird be leaning backward if I do so? That was the shoreline and it was either keep the sun right behind me and catch this open wing shadowless pose or move and ruin the potential shot. My eye is not offended by the diagonal as it roughly mirrors the diagonal of the bird's open wings.

    Grace:

I think you have made the best compromise on the leveling of the bird and sun angle you had to work with. If you leveled the far shore line, not only would the bird be tilted CW, but the wave in front would be at an angle, which would be more noticeable than the background. The bird is so dominant, that obviously most folks weren't bothered by the tilting shoreline. And yes, the angle does repeat the angle of the wing, which is a plus.

I think reds are some of the finest subjects in Florida, always full of interesting behaviour, and enjoyed your capture.

    Cheers

Thanks, Randy. This was my first experience with an active reddish, hope I get to photograph one again sometime (in great light) ...so animated and fast.

I had a minute, and wanted to show an option for downplaying the impact of the slanted shoreline. I used the color replacement tool and low opacity clone stamp to downplay it.

Your repost is fine. If the diagonal bothered me, I would change it, but it just doesn't and I miss the color in the original.
