Very interesting image for me - I have just bought a 2x extender to go with a 500mm. This image shows that sharp images seem possible even down at 1/80 in capable hands. I like some of the detail in the beak and skin around the eye.

    Tom,

I bet you would not regret using 500 with 2x at descent light just that you have to cautious with your selection of Aperture.
Recent days i posted images taken at 1000mm you would love to see at ..

Cannot wait - BTW how much microadjustment have you had to do with the 1d MK4, 500 & 2x extender combo?

I havent did it yet but looking at artie's suggestions i think i might have to check that out soon for better sharper images.

Interesting - I'm still deciding at what distance to try microadjustment - I was thinking 30 meters - being 30 times focal length of 1000mm. I did a microadjustment of -3 with the 500, 1.4 ext combo at 25 times the focal length of 700mm.

Beautiful image. Do you need microadjustment with images as good as this? I know it begs the question but could you really ask for much better? I tried microadjustment some time ago though I must admit it wasn't with the latest gadget recommended by Artie, I found the the results slightly confusing and very subjective, I ended up going back to factory settings and haven't had any problems- leastwise not to me. I know we are looking at screen sized compressed images but I can see no difference in the "good" shots submitted before microadjustment to those submitted after it came in vogue. Was this the latest x2 or the previous one?

    Jonathan

Absolutely true. Micro Adjustments are pretty confusing to me as i tried once and failed to understand and never checked but as i have 7d, 1dm4, 500 and 300 f/4 with 1.4 II and 2x II i think giving it try to understand is not a bad idea altogether.

Thats only when we have solid proven system like Lens Align or some other in market made by pro's.

    Mital,
Excellent portrait, light, sharpness, details & HA is perfect. I can see some cloning signs in the BG.

Phenomenal shot, Mital. The detail is great, and I love the scarring, if that's what it is, on the beak -- seems like a lot for a juvenile. It's just spot-on perfect.

Another excellent portrait Mital. Echo all the positives above. Like everything about this one.

I'd remove the whitish faint blob at the bill tip and a few below.

I tried my 2x with the 500 for the first time last weekend in very low light and was very happy with the results. Definitely worth it for static shots where reach is necessary.

Love this portrait, Mital. Just about perfect in every way. The feather detail, colors, BG and IQ are exquisite.
