Haven't posted here in a while as I have not been out shooting much. Did get out this AM for a while. I think these are Pine Warblers , but not possitive. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Good to see you posting again Joe! I like the interaction and the pose of the bird on the right. I'd prefer a bit more eye contact with the bird on the left. Also, I'd go a little brighter overall. A horizontal crop might have worked here too.

Joe this is simply beautiful behavioral shot you have got here.

Doug said it all and i too favor the horizontal framing for such lovely art.

Hey Joe, I do not mind the vertical COMP at all. I actually like it and would probably prefer it to any horizontal crop. I believe that you have the ID right. Coast Guard station?

Thanks Joe. That place was a migrant trap. I wish that I lived closer to DeSoto as they get a pretty good fall migration there....

It is a bit hard to tell but it looks like both birds have yellow feet which would make them Blackpoll Warblers.

Hey Rick, These are definitely Pine Warblers but you did have me doubting myself till I went to my Sibley. Fall Blackpoll has a more distinct eye line, faint but distinct streaks on the side of the breast, and white undertail coverts. Joe's birds are plainer faced, have barely visible blurry streaks on the side of the breasts, and definitely gray undertail coverts. And it looks as if Pine has yellow feet also; best not to rely on a single characteristic.

Arthur compare this picture with Grace's Scalzo's picture furthur up in this forum.

I was not aware Pine Warblers can have yellow feet.

Thanks. Grace's bird is much yellower. Other than that it is a confusing bird with apparently gray undertail coverts and the lack of a dark eyeline. It too may be a Pine. Sibley clearly shows that the bottom of the feet in all ages of Pine are yellow. Heck, I could be wrong on one or both. I will send both images to friends much smarter than me and check back here.

Here is what top birder/ID expert Kevin Karlson said about this image:

"Both birds in the vertical photo are immature female Pine Warblers, which do not show any yellow underparts; very little if any blurry streaking on the upper breast flanks; and lack the white vent of adult birds. These are tricky the first few times you run into them, but nothing resembles their dull plumage accompanied by two bold wingbars and a heavy, slightly decurved bill. The very long tail is another signature feature of Pine Warbler at any age or sex."

Here is what Richard Crossley, author of "The Crossley Guide" said:

    "Pines."

Here is what artist/writer/naturalist Julie Zickefoose said:

"I'm with you, Artie--pine on the fighters in the pine."

    Rick, Are you convinced yet?

    See Grace's post for more.

    I am convinced.

Got to love them "confusing fall warblers."

Agree and that is good. Now I do not have to sweat hearing from David Sibley himself ; he must be traveling.
