    Default Green Heron with Mantis

This was taken at a local pond. The light was getting harsh. I was surprised to see the Praying Mantis on the branch had not been eaten by the Heron. All C&Cs are welcome and appreciated.

Hi Jim, good alert fishing pose from the heron, and I like the overall detail and colours captured, both on the heron and the BG. I think the heron thought a tasty fish would have been better than a crunchy praying mantis. Maybe a little more left and top if you have. Cheers.

Excellent stance, with the tight grip on a nice, slanted perch, with great look at both feet. Nice sharp details too.
These are such interesting characters and you have a great capture of this one at work.
The mantis is indeed living dangerously.
    Superb image, Jim.

Love the pose and the BG colors. The greens of BG match the green around the eye! I would like to see bit more on top and left.

It looks like the moult of a dragonfly nymph to me, right about where you would expect one too...Are you sure it was a mantis? Just curious...

Hi Nick. I thought it was a Praying Mantis because of the shape and legs. I have never seen a moult of a dragonfly nymph so I guess it could be. Thanks for the information.

Nice pose and nice young bird. Light well handled. Definitely not a mantis and almost surely a dragonfly nymph (or the shed shell of a departed dragonfly).
