What turned out to be the tamest bird of the year didn't start off that way...or at least it seemed. The first day I saw this Red-necked Phalarope I was not sure what to expect so I took 15-20 minutes to approach it within good range. I soon figured out I could just walk right over to it and plump down right beside it At first I didn't like the partially covered face, but when I noticed the bill showing through the little wave I liked it better. I got nice and wet for this one...now the water there has since receded and I can see what I was lying in

Canon 7D + 100-400L @360mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1600s., f/7.1, ISO 400 (settings histogram checked), natural light, handheld, FF lenght-wise. A feww brighter highlights in the water patched out, as well as a stray OOF water drop near the top edge that did not add to the image.

this is brilliant art. i like lift up of water with dip of face in. Loved the crop as well.

Just that i might reduce the greenish tones in front ripples.

Sweet. I like the pano crop and how it matches the bulge of the water. Funny how the bill no longer seems connected to the bird's head. Is refraction the right word? BTW, I like it!

I love the movement of the water especiallyat the tail end. Great how you got the bill coming thru the water too.

Hey Dan, good image design, and an interesting 'swimming' pose from the Phalarope. Nice colours on him, and I do like the darker colour of the water too.

Good shot. The little wave made picture into something more than a traditional arts photography.
