    Default HY Green Heron

This hatching year Green Heron was shot while I was in about 4 feet of water. I used a Canon 40D with a Canon 500mm f/4.0 lens, a Canon 1.4x (II) teleconverter, and a Kinko 20mm extension tube that I was floating on a boogie board. My ISO was 200, my aperture was f/6.3, shutter speed was 1/800, and an EV of -0.33. The image is not cropped, and nothing was added or removed. The slightly smaller aperture was because of the extension tube.

Sharp with a killer raised foot. EXP looks right on. Nice job framing that rear foot. Pointing the lens another inch to the right would not have hurt as there is a bit too much room in front of the bird.

    Mike:

Great perspective, crouching pose with foot up,sharpness and exposure.

Do wish for a bit more body to right, although it does give it kind of the feel that he is sneaking into the frame. Quite tight on top, but it does accentuate his crouching pose.

Neat that you could get in so close to him that you needed a tube! They aren't so tame here. Did you have camo on?

    Cheers

Love the pose and foot, I would probably crop a bit from the bottom and left.
Some sneaky expression on that bird.

Randy, If you go the "Welcome" (1st) page of my website (www.mike-hannisian.com) the image in the upper right shows the setup I was in. I bought the biggest boogie board I could find and then attached a 24 inch in diameter flow pot base (the part that the excess water goes into) with bungie cords to the board. I then placed my camera with lens within the flower pot base, get into the water and covered myself with camo cloth. This proved to be a very stable platform so long as I let go of everything if I slipped.

+1 with everyone from above, nice detail and facial expression, if that's possible on a bird. I followed one at Viera yesterday and he wouldn't let me within 20 feet, so you were doing well closing the gap.
