    Default Cheetah snack

After stopping at Melkvlei picnic site in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, I headed towards Tweerivieren and found this male cheetah eating a springbok fawn it had killed. It was relatively close to the road and while eating I was able to take this image. The cheetah ate nervously and moved off within 20 minutes. It was difficult to manouver the vehicle as the 4x4 trailer was attached, as he looked me in the eye I took this image. It was difficult taking the image as I had to lean over the passenger seat to take the image. I used the converter to isolate the subject as the cheetah was too small in the frame with the 500mm lens attached alone. Ideally I would have had the 500mm lens and 2x converter on the Wimberly support and window bracket, but this was not possible. Camera details as below:
    Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII
    EF 500mm f4 LUIS lens
    EF x2 II converter
    f8
    ISO 400
    1/200
    Exposure compensation:+2 stops
    Processing with ACR and CS5.
Any comments and help gratefully appreciated.

Hi Mark, seems you got low enough with the vehicle to get a nice perspective on this.

For me there is enough eye contact not to get drawn to the whiter area to the RHS, but would have preferred more scrub bush, but guess that is in an ideal world. The eyes look a bit too colourful & bright, but you were there so..., but like the lion, I do feel the clarity & detail slightly lacking, but that is I guess partly down to the 2x, (suggestion, sell it and buy the mkIII). Might try and tone down the yellow a bit too, gives the animal a little more depth I think.

If you have more room ll round, I personally might have move the whole crop down a fraction, giving a little less above and a bit more at the foot of the image, but cropping is personal.

Thanks for your help Steve, Ihave done a repost with a little bit of yellow removed and hopefully with a little bit more contrast and sharpening. I think the repost is a better image. The crop is from the top, but nothing I can do with the bottom of the image. Comments welcome.

Mark - nice pov, eye contact and dof. You've brought out more detail in the repost. I would prefer a bit more room on the lhs.

nice sighting and good job on the repost Mark
you can see it was a hot day!
you got some good IQ out of that 500mm/2x converter - at least better than I would have expected.
