I was excited to get my first decent sighting of these very small "small mammals" on a quick trip to the Kruger Park last year.

It's nice to see so many new faces contributing such nice images! Let's keep the community spirit going by posting a lot...and critiquing each others' images frequently so we all can learn from each other!

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s with Nikkor 200-400mm f4 VR @ 400mm
    f4.0 @ 1/1250 SS @ ISO-1000
    50% crop

I love these little creatures that are so intelligent and beautiful. Like the standing pose and the way it is looking at you. Did you get this shot in the camp so you could get this low?

What an interesting looking creature, Morkel. Thank you for sharing. I really like the way you have presented him here, b/c you can really tell how small he is. If you had made him bigger in the frame, we wouldn't have been able to tell as easily.

I agree that the inclusion of the grass helps to set the scale.

I love dwarf mongoose and like this composition a lot. The grasses and sand make a very nice background.

As far as posting images go … I just have to wait until I get away to get more material (unless I start trawling through old files which I may do if I get desperate).

Thanks Lorant...I was shooting out of the car. These little guys were in and next to the road, and a bit ahead of me. This allowed me to get a low-ish perspective here.

Cute little guy, and nicely composed, Morkel! Got to love that face and standing pose. Good contrast, like the texture to fur, and habitat works really well.
Is the Dwarf just as adept at killing cobras as the regular size mongoose?

Thanks Marina (and Robert)...the reason for composing like this was actually to try and provide a sense of their size...

No problem Hilary - as long as you are still around ...be nice if you do dig up some gems from the archives too

Thanks Brendan. Yes indeed they are...much of their diet and behaviour is similar to the larger mongoose variants.

Morkel - I agree the comp and inclusion of the grass really provide a sense of size. Great pose and your usual IQ.

Nice capture of these "flighty" little charachters Morkel, the only view I normally get of them is a hasty retreat. Love the pose, detail on the Mongoose and setting.

Hey Mork, classic pose, and I remember capturing a few shots of these guys last year too. Pretty busy little characters, and if you keep stiil they get around to do their business.

Good work here Morkel, and the upright pose adds interest to the shot, as does the thoughtful inclusion of the grasses on the right side. Wouldnt change anything with this one. I would like to spend more time on the forum but am away a lot of the time, and have just now returned from two weeks of travel to other wild places....will try catch up in the next few days.
    cheers

Great image Morkel. I know how difficult it is to take an image of these mongoose are, as they are generally all over the place. I like the direct eye contact, the pose where the mongoose has turned around to look at the lens and the detail. Well done and TFS.
