    Default Diving Heermann's Gull

One more from the whale watching trip... as the pelicans and gulls were diving so close, I wanted to get an image of the action under water. I could not do so till late afternoon when the sunlight at an angle allowed better view of the underwater. Finally I got an Heermann's gull going at the fish scrap at an angle. This was the best frame I had in the sequence and I clipped the wings a bit Does this crop or the Image work? For processing, I used Topaz adjust and denoise.

Indranil, I hope you don't mind...and let me know if you do!...but when I saw this, I saw a different take on it that with Fractalius. I did two layers of Fractalius with this, each with a different effect and opacity...trying to bring out some primary detail while adding a bit more abstraction at the same time, if that makes sense. It's your image, your vision...just thinking out loud and thought this might give you another take/food for thought on an image that I think has a lot of potential.

Very nice, John. I am glad you tried it and it looks excellent! You make good point on the filter itself... but I wanted to see if this stands as an OOTB photo without significant use of filter (other than adjust etc) and your repost has answered it

Hey Indranil, The underwater action, mouth open about to engulf the fish is fabulous, although John idea is cool looking, all that action is a bit obsured to the filtering. I'm sure with a couple of masking tweaks Johns view would be another option. The Above water part of the bird is a bit bright to me, and I would do some light work to favor the underwater action...........Sure, you could some additional filter work, just take care to keep that underwater action in tack. I for one think just light filtering might do the trick................wonderful capture, IMHO.

Indranil, This is OOTB for sure! I love the face and the fish. I think John's repost looks good. I might reveal a bit more of the face, splash and fish if it were mine. Neat capture!!

Jay, Denise, thanks. Here is a repost, extending on John's vision of multiple fract layers....

Indranil, I like the underwater detail you maintained on your repost...the Fractal work is nicely done, and the detail is kept where it's needed. Good job!

Thank you John. Going back to Denise's point on keeping the splash, here is another report...

Man, it's close.....I like somewhere between frame 6 and 8. If I had to choose it would #6. Nice re-work.

Indranil, I'm with Jay - somewhere between 6 and 8. Or both I love the fract work and being able to see the underwater part of the image.
