My Gitzo Leveling base unbeknownst to me developed a crack in the casting just above the slot for the tensioning device. When I placed the rig on my shoulder the leveling base completely seperated, the cup remained affixed to the tripod, while the upper part of the base came crashing down along with my Wimberley head and camera gear.
Luckily only the rear flange of my 500mm suffered damage.
I received my new RRS TA-3-LB Versa 3 leveling base...hands down without a doubt better design than the Gitzo.
Head is smaller, lighter, with 15 degree tilting off axis. And, the platform and bowl are not screwed together with flimsy threads, but rather held together with 4 recessed locktite screws. And, there is no casting to crack!
I will be replacing my other Gitzo leveling base as well before years end. And, may even trade up to the RRS tripod as well.
