This is a heavy crop 15% so IQ is not great. One of those moments when I wished I had a longer lens. This lasted about 30 seconds. These are small birds and they were maybe 30 meters away at a guess. Taken this morning.

    1D MK 4 - 500mm + 1.4 ext, 1/1600 @ 6.3, ISO 500, EV -1/3.

    Thanks Tom

    Tom:

The crop does let you down here in regards to IQ. The small in frame subject placement is good. The background is busy enough with lots of highlights that it does tend to overpower the birds.

They seem a bit distracted from the job at hand.

    Cheers

You had just about everything working against you here, Tom. I still would keep this as a record image tho. What are these birds?

I like the comp you chose here, I just wish it wasn't the result of such a large crop. Neat scene, I'm sure it was fun to observe!

By no means an art image - These are Black-fronted Dotterels Grace.

Sure was. I have never seen this before with this species - Once you have set up and are sitting these guys do come quite close - maybe next time.

Tom, did they finish the "job" at hand or was were presence sour the mood

If I was you I'd keep an eye on this pair, you might have some little ones to photograph in the not too distant future
