I was going for something minimalist and artitistic...nice to have the opportunity to try things for a local "rarity"! Like Graces's lone tern, this phalarope was the only bird around within a couple of hundred yards. Photo taken just before sunrise. Good reflections of this little bird were rare as it kept creating ripples in the calm water with its' perpetual movements - I was happy with this one.

    Hope this works for you!

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering (this was close to +3 stops if I remember correctly), 1/200s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, FF plus canvas added top and left.

Works wonderful. Very powerful image that just draws the viewer in. The little bit of blue in the ripples puts it over.

    Sure works for me!

I think the ripples and the not glass like reflection make this image. Love the comp.

Thanks for sharing this image Daniel, you are always an inspiration.

Hey Dan, this works for me. Good angle of the Phalarope, and just the hint of blue in the ripples, puts this over the top. One of your best IMHO.

Love the artistic, minimalist feel here. Everything has come together very nicely in this image, Daniel. Very well done.
Would you mind sharing the histogram of the original capture? Having never made high-key images, the histogram would be very instructive for me. Thanks!

Dan, this definitely works for me. I like the high key and blue ripples especially. Comp is great too. Only thing that bothers me a tad is the strange pose of the phalarope. I am always glad to see more phalarope images!

    Well done!

I am not a fan of high key images but this is really nice. I think it is the blue in the ripple that really makes this image sing. I really like the comp. One of your nicest pics!

Thanks Sidharth! Here's a Lightroom screen capture of the before raw file processing.

Excellent image Daniel! The high key water with a hint of texture and color, along with the soft reflection of the bird combine for a great effect. I like the vast white canvas with the thin black border too.
