    Default Watch Peeling Paint?

Had a great time as a guest on Denise's Eastern State Penitentiary workshop. I did some of the standard stuff and then looked for something new and different. Like very old paint :).

Tripod mounted 24-105mm IS L lens with the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. The base exposure at +1 was .6 sec. at f.8. The HDR image was created in Photomatix from a 5-frame AEB sequence using the 2-second timer and Live View for mirror lock.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Very cool. Love the colors and the details too! I also like the shadows. I find the red check mark-like line near the upper left...rust maybe..a little distracting. I might be inclined to evict it. Did you shoot any at ESP with the 800mm?

Andrew, I have been undecided about the red wire thingie from the start. I might try losing 1/4 inch off the end that touches the frame. 800? Heck, I brought the 70-200 along and don't think that I ever used it.... Forgot to mention that the focal length here was 55mm.

Good for you Art for finding something new and different. You turned decay into a colorful abstract composition. Have to agree about evicting the red wire thingie, and maybe adding a touch of contrast and a bit more to the blacks to bring out the bumps and texture more. Nicely seen and composed.

I really like the processing Artie! Not too grungy, colors look good and just enough detail for my taste.

Artie, the detail and colors are amazing. The composition is also very interesting, you treated the peeling paint chips as your subjects and placed them nicely in the frame. I can imagine this as an aerial shot of a continent, with rivers and streams and a very large pipeline running through it. But that's just me...

Thanks Kerry (and all)> Funny you say that. I made another one before this in a different cell and thought "Eastern USA state map." This one had nicer colors.

Artie, I kind of like the old wire. The composition and colors are terrific. This is very well seen and captured. You always bring an element of excitement to any workshop that you attend and you always offer such great suggestions. All of the clients are very happy to have you join in!

Artie, there's a lot to like about this image...love the contrast between the turquoise and yellow paint..the rough texture of the wall, the lines leading through the image created by the cracked paint...and the way the eye is drawn through the photo by the intersection of the pipe and the paint line. The wire/rust line in the ULC doesn't bother me...it might make better image if you removed the tip touching the edge of the frame as you mentioned, I'd have to see it. The small, almost oval shaped rust spot near the URC makes for a good anchor point in the image. Nicely seen!

Thanks Denise for your kind words. I enjoyed both the NYC Skyline Workshop and the Eastern State Penitentiary trip; getting out of my bird and nature photography box is always fun and helps me improve all of my photography. The cool part is that the principles are the same whatever the subject.

I went for the compromise repost.

Thanks John. Often when folks create pure-pattern images they forget that they almost always need to take great care with framing and image design....

Artie, I like the repost...it's such a subtle nuance, but it does make a difference!

Hi Artie...This is pretty amazing! amazing color....amazing texture. I especially like the bottom blue part of the image but was thinking that you might consider softening the straight blue line at the top of the blue segment. I think i would eject the red wire....IMHO it looks out of place.... but thats just me. Looking forward to seeing more of your non- bird imagery!
