Default Avocet~ Rare Visitor to MA

    Attached Images Attached Images

One of my favorite subjects and we typically have one or two a year show up during the fall in NE MA and I was lucky enough to get on this one the other afternoon. This particular sunject had much more of a redness to the typical dull rust I have seen in the past....left over I would assume of breeding plumage.

Very cloudy with a few dim peaks of the sun through the overcast.

    Nikon D300s, 600VR, TC14EII, f5.6, ISO 500, 1/2000, NearUniWB, CW metering, 0.7EV applied.

I like this image a lot. I like the HA, BG, & I especially like the water droplets & the splash in the water. Maybe a bit more room at the bottom & the RHS if you have it.

What a beauty of a shot, Jim. I have never seen one of these in person, but I find the avocet to be almost my favorite bird to view in other people's pics. You've done a great job here with EXP, head angle, BG and I love the drops and splash. Did you clone out something along the neck and upper back? I see signs of something that looks not quite right but I could be wrong.

    Hi Mellisa...

    I don't see them often enough :)

I cloned out one little dark blob in the water in the crook of the birds neck on the back. Now that you mention it I need to re-work it. Thanks for the heads up :)

Lovely pose and great water droplets. The first thing I noticed after the water droplets was the halo type effect around the top of the head and upper back as Melissa pointed out. You were lucky to have this bird show up while you were there, but also to get this muted light.

I love the DoF and the angle the bird is facing you in this Image. Also The exposure is spot on. The drops of water are the Icing on the cake.

Cleaned up the back intersection of the neck / back and also got rid of the out of place neck feather in the front.

    Jim:

Excellent techs, with your typical excellent exposure of the whites

Like the pose, with curves of the neck and bill, curve along the lower neck and breast, nice.

    Drops a bonus.

I could see a sliver more canvas below.

    Cheers

Excellent pose, very graceful drinking behaviou. Only thing that could have improved on the pose is better separation of the legs, but hey we can't ask for everything at once...especially rarities!! Love the soft colours. You cleaned up the spot in the neck/back crook well, but now you've left a small smudge where you eliminated a stray throat feather from the orignal...I would have kept that feather in. Well done Jim!

Fantastic pose, and killer water drops. Great subdued light. Techs good on all counts. Good catch by Melissa. Excellent image.
