    Default Western Sandpiper

I photographed this sandpiper on the central coast of Oregon mid-August. A small flock was flitting about so I decided to sit quietly in the sand and wait for them to flit in my direction, which they did. I rested the camera on my knees. Late afternoon light.

    Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 400 DO f4 IS + 1.4x, 1/1250, f8, exp. comp +1/3, ISO 400

    C & C most appreciated.

A very nice picture, Nancy. Many times it is better to wait for them and they almost always come to you.

Gorgeous blue water , light and a great reflection Nancy. I likethe windblown feathers at the tail and the contact of the beak in the water.

Great low angle, nice background, nice pose. Maybe another round of sharpening.

Good low perspective Nancy, and I like the feeding pose too. For your set up, I feel the IQ is not quite there - is this a big crop. Another round of sharpening may help.

Yes I like the image too but the definition is a little lacking especially in the head.

I'm hoping that a lack of sharpening is the answer, and I'd like to see the result after another round or two. The late-afternoon light is gorgeous; must have been nice sitting there in that soft light waiting for them.

Here is the image with another round of sharpening. This is only a 50% crop. Is this much different? Sometimes with the Canon 1.4 teleconverter on the 400 DO images seem a little soft. I have done the micro-adjustment procedure but I don't have a ton of confidence using the 1.4 (the new version).

I like the composition and sharpness much better on the repost, but it needs some CW rotation (which is OK on the OP). Nice feeding behaviour and I like the bit of water/mud being pulled up at the bill tip.
