    Default Puffin

    Hi

Back in June last year my friend Steve and I made a trip up to the Farne Islands off the North East Coast of England. Due to poor weather in the morning are crossing to the islands was delayed so we kept ourselves busy photographing some unusually friendly Eider Duck in the harbour with a bit of help from a loaf of white sliced bread. We only had two hours on Inner Farne Island which is just an incredible place for bird photography from the Artic Terns attacking the visitors as soon as they step of the boat to constant stream of puffins bringing in sandeels.

I always forget how small puffins are and how fast they fly, but at least they tend to fly in a straight line which helps tracking them. They were passing so close that I switch over to the 70-200mm lens with which this shot was taken.

    This shot was taken with a 1Dmk2N and 70 - 200mm F2.8 (at 200mm) at ISO320 F5.6 at 1/2500s 0.67 EV.

I hope to return again this June :)

    Cheers

Beautiful flight capture of this puffin in flight Rich. Excellent BG and placed well in the frame with excellent detail and a mouth full of fish. Who could ask for more. Love it. No nits for me

    Hi Rich,

You did good with handling the contrast. You might want to try a reverse "s" curve. That helps to reduce contrast. Sometimes after I do that, I use a selective color adjustment layer and and 2 to 5% black to the black, neutral and sometimes white channel to bring back the punch.

Good job tracking him. Cropping looks good to me and nice position of the wings.

So you are working hard to get on my black list, aren't you??????

That is one image we couldn't have in our Newfoundland trip, we were a bit early and they were feeding out in the ocean.

Great advise by RAM on reversing the curve. Wish for a catch light too :)

Thanks for your comments and the useful tip on the reserve S curve. I know many of the members are in the USA but should they ever find themselves in the UK during June then the Farne Island should be on their essential places to visit. However one recommendation is to take a good hat unless you want your head pecked by artic terns!!!!

    Cheers

    Rich
