Managed to take a quick pic of this sanderling before my mates lab chased it a kilometer up the shore! Managed to capture that too . You can see it on my Flickr

Adjusted hue, clarity and increased blacks in LR3 then used Topaz detail and NR to finish off. Getting used to these new topaz plugins so be gentle

Nice beach scene, I like the dual waves. There is a blown area along the bottom of the wing, and comp-wise I would crop away a good chunk off the bottom, about half the empty space below. Perhaps a bit of CCW rotation would be good too.

You are very patient with your buddy's dog...I'd be fuming big time!!

Agree with Daniel about the blown highlights and the cropping suggestions. Nice that you have the head above the 1st sea water foam line and between the two waves. TFS

Thanks a lot for your comments. I will try and re-edit along those guidelines and see what i end up with

Regarding the composition, i left the bottom area because i quite liked the reflection on the wet sand. You don't think I need to leave that in?

Daniel, i have 2 dogs of my own that always end up frightening away my subjects! It pisses me off big time but its funny at the same time! Makes it even more of a challenge!

I can imagine it does make it more challenging!! The difference would be night and day if you left them home once in a while (if you can)

About the reflection, it is not very strongly defined, so you can crop into it without affecting the overall image but at the same time strenghtening the composition, the compromise is well worth it IMO:
